Watford Hospital Radio

Deryk Nicholson

Hi, My name’s Deryk and I’m the Vice Chairman at Watford Hospital Radio.  You may all be asking what I do here at the Station. Well, I carry out the normal role for a Vice Chairman of supporting our Chairman in our monthly and committee meetings when necessary as well being a point of communication for any committee positions we have currently been unable to fill.  I am also WHR’s representative to the HBA (Hospital Broadcasting Association) which is the umbrella charity to which a large number of Hospital Radio Stations belong.

My most enjoyable job at WHR is as the Outside Events Sound Engineer, following the “booking” of an event (normally by our Outside Event Coordinator), I determine the sound equipment required for the event (ranging from a PA for an awards evening, PA for an open air service (recently for 800 Scouts) to a full PA with CDs etc. in a field for a Carnival or Fete). On the day of the event, with the help of other WHR members, we rig the equipment (and usually hope for good weather at the same time). At most of the events we do WHR members also present in order to  provide continuity  throughout proceedings.  Obviously at the end of the day/event there is always the quick de-rig of the equipment to be completed, concluding with satisfied customers and a donation to WHR to support the ongoing work at the Station back at the hospital.
